Weston, DuPage County, Illinois

Weston, Illinois was a community in DuPage County, Illinois, near Batavia and Warrenville. It was voted out of existence by its village board in order to provide a site for the National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), which was selected by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission on December 16, 1966.
==History==

The town was predated by a 100 home subdivision named West Field, and after the developer went bankrupt, the government swept in, took control, and the residents stayed. The residents purchased their homes from the government, and later worked to incorporate into a town, thereby freeing them from DuPage County control. After being unable to incorporate due to a technicality, the now unincorporated community sought out the help of the Federal Government through the US Atomic Energy Commission. The National Academy of Sciences also made a visit to the site of the community, and in 1966, after much controversy from within the community, and the surrounding county, the community was chosen to house the new National Accelerator Laboratory. Shortly after that, it was revealed that due to the town planning to be part of the laboratory, the town was to instead reside within the laboratory's boundaries, meaning that the community's residents had to sell their homes to the State of Illinois, and the community had ceased to exist.
The town was about to grow in size due to a proposed development for 50,000 people, but the County sued developer William Riley in order to prevent the town from incorporating, citing the fact that the town had not "properly incorporated", and that the town had no legal right to annex land for development. In April 1964, four months after the town's initial unveiling, the project had died, with the developer claiming that the County's lawsuit was to blame. Unknown to people at the time, Riley was also hiding from the Chicago Mob, who after shaking him down for the "privilege" of building another development in the suburb of Northlake, went into hiding. Riley was also contending with Federal Tax Evasion charges, and after he testified against the Chicago Mob, he was given a new identity, and was cleared of the tax evasion charges.
The town would have boasted the largest mall in North America, with some 2,000 stores within it. The town also was to have an airport, more than 11,000 homes, athletics fields, a town center, and even large man-made lakes.
